Recall Alert: Electric Mini SE

BMW’s Mini division has issued a recall for 128 units of the electric Mini Cooper SE Hardtop 2 Door from model years 2021 through 2023 because water can leak into their high-voltage batteries. That can cause the vehicles to stall or, in rare circumstances, catch fire.

Mini tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that, on specific dates, factory workers may not have sufficiently sealed the two halves of Cooper SE battery shells. That can allow water into the batteries.

The company knows of two “field incidents,” one in the United States and one in Germany.

Dealers will fix the problem by leak-testing batteries built on those dates and repairing them if necessary.
